What Are The Advantages Of Taping?

Knowing the benefits of taping after rhinoplasty will give you additional motivation to follow the treatment. Here are some of the advantages of postoperative nose taping:

  • Reducing Nose Swelling (edema): one of the most important benefits of using tapes is the reduction of swelling. Swelling causes more pain and slows down the recovery process. Tapes help you control and reduce the swelling. The result of rhinoplasty is usually not visible for at least 6 to 12 months since the swelling does not allow seeing the real results. In this case, the use of tapes can control the swelling rate.

  • Reducing the Risk of Drooping Nose: one of the big concerns of people who want to undergo a nose job surgery is having a drooping nose after the surgery. In some people, a drooping nose makes a need for revision surgery. The use of tapes reduces the risk of nose deformity and sagging nose. It supports the nose and helps maintain its shape after the surgery.

  • Acting as a Danger Sign: it is interesting to know that one of the benefits of a taping nose is to act as an alarm sign. Post-operative nasal tapes warn others to be more careful around you. It reminds you and other people about the sensitivity of the shape and form of your nose. It must have occurred to you to joke with someone or make a certain move and immediately think that the other person is in the process of caring for a particular part of the body.

In these cases, you usually avoid making a dangerous behavior that can cause injury or pain to the other person. So obviously using nasal tapes can greatly reduce the risk of reactions and jokes that are harmful to the nose and it constantly tells those around you to be more careful. Remember that postoperative care has a direct impact on the outcome of every cosmetic surgery, and any incident can risk the outcome.

How to Tape the Nose?

 Step 1: Choosing the Tape

In the first step, you should be careful about choosing suitable tapes. For doing that, the paper tapes between one to one and a half centimeters wide are good options. The best tapes could be those that are anti-allergy and 1.25 cm wide.

Step 2: Clean Your Skin

At this stage, you should wash your face with soap and water and clean it with an alcohol swab. This helps to remove skin oils and makeup that can prevent the tape from sticking properly. After cleaning your skin, you can apply the tapes.

Step 3: Application of Tape

For applying the tapes, you should stand in front of a mirror to ensure the appropriate placement. Use a proper nose tape and put it in a tape holder to use them more conveniently. Cut the tape to a length of 10 to 12 cm and stick it in a U-shape form. You need to place a U-shape tape at the bottom of the nose tip so that it covers the nose holes (nostrils) and the sides of the nose. Then you need to use 6 or 7 pieces of 2-3 cm nose tapes to cover the nose bridge. There is no need for sticking the tapes with a lot of pressure, rather than that, you should press the tapes gently to make sure they stick well.

For doing that, you should leave the tip of the nose and start from 2-3 millimeters upper. These tapes are intended to support the tip to prevent it from dropping. The second layer should be placed slightly upper on the nose than the previous layer and it should be overlapping the first layer for a little bit. You will need 3-4 pieces of tape to be applied to the nose. Finally, you can trim the redundant part of the tapes with a pair of scissors.

Step 4:  Removal of Tape

Removing the tapes must be done carefully because after the surgery your nose tissue is more delicate. You cannot just grab the end of the tape and pull the tape off. This can destroy the purpose of taping which is making the skin adhere better to the tissue. Either you can use an over-the-counter adhesive removal solution to help the tapes take off easily, or you can simply take advantage of a hot shower and soap.

You may want to use a tweezer to grasp the edge of the tape and gently take the tape off the skin. This will minimize the chance you pull the skin up off its underlying cartilage. You should use tapes until your surgeon tells you to stop.

How Many Months Do I Have To Tape My Nose

How Many Months Do I Have To Tape My Nose?

Most patients are recommended to tape their nose for two weeks to two months after the surgery. During this period, the tape affects the swelling and the shape of the nose. However, patients may tape their noses for a longer period depending on their skin, soft tissue, and the healing process.

The required period for taping the nose in people who have a thicker skin type is often longer than in those who have a thin type of skin. If the skin type is thin, taping the nose may be stopped after 2 weeks; however, for those who have thicker skin, this period should be extended to 2 months.

The Effects of Long-term Use of Tapes

It should be said that using tapes for a longer period does not lead to a better-looking nose. Some patients expect to see the ultimate result right after the nose cast is removed. As the result, since the swelling could last for a longer period, some patients may prefer to hide their noses under the tapes to avoid checking their noses in the mirror frequently. However, covering the nose for a long period of time does not seem a good decision.

Taping the nose for a long time can cause skin complications. Therefore, for better ventilation, it is better to apply the tapes only during the recommended period. Candidates should know that at least until three months after the surgery, the outcome is not finalized and it can improve every day. Thus, you should not rush for having the best result; instead, you should wait for the final look to appear for at least after 1 year.
