Stomach liposuction dissolves the fat cells from the abdomen area and takes them out from under the skin. The result of this procedure is permanent unless the patient continues the old lifestyle and gains weight again. Stomach liposuction can remove about 70% of the stored fat cells in the abdomen area. This procedure is usually done under general anesthesia, although some surgeons may prefer local anesthesia.

During the process, a surgical team will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and level of blood oxygen. The procedure may take some hours depending on the extent of fat removal. Before starting, the surgeon often marks the areas that need to be treated. Even some photos may be taken to compare before and after results later. After the solution affected the fat cells, the surgeon uses a vacuum to suction the fat cells out of the skin.

Small drainage tubes may be inserted into the treated areas to get the extra blood and fluid out of the body in the first few days.  After the process, you need to spend at least a few hours in the hospital or clinic to be under the monitoring of the recovery team. You may need to stay overnight to ensure you are not dehydrated or shocked due to fluid loss. If you lose a lot of fluid and blood during the surgery, you may need intravenous fluid replacement and in very rare cases a blood transfusion. Your surgeon will instruct you to wear a compression garment for a while to prevent fluid accumulation and swelling.

How Long Is Recovery?

You may not need to stay in the hospital depending on the area of treatment. However, you should expect bruising, swelling, and soreness for a few weeks. To control swelling, you may be required to wear a compression garment for 1 to 2 months. You probably need to take antibiotics to prevent infection. Your doctor may also prescribe some pills to control the pain. After the procedure, your doctor may leave the incisions open to put temporary drains inside them in order to increase fluid drainage.

During the recovery time, you should expect some irregularities in your body contours while the remaining fat settles in the right position under the skin.  Although each person’s healing process could vary from the others, most people can go back to work in a few days and they can start normal activities within 2 weeks.

Can I get Six-pack Abs by Stomach Liposuction?

Liposuction removes fat cells accumulated in the abdomen area, but the Abs are made through both liposuction and the gym. You have probably seen people with a flat stomach but they do not necessarily have what we call a six-pack. You should not expect well-defined strong abs from liposuction without body training and hard exercise.  Therefore, although you may receive a flat stomach, no one can get six-pack abs without having specific training at the gym.

Are the Results Permanent?

The fat cells are permanently removed during liposuction. Nevertheless, your body can produce fat cells again if you do not follow a healthy diet. If you gain weight, the fat deposits reappear, although they may show up on other body areas. To keep your new body contour after the surgery, you should follow a diet including lean protein, fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. In addition, plan to have regular exercise to prevent fat accumulation.
