Liposuction Process
The liposuction procedure includes some steps, which are described below:
Before starting liposuction, your doctor will use some sort of sedation for your comfort during the procedure. General anesthesia, local anesthesia, or intravenous sedation are used according to the treated area and the surgeon’s opinion.
Liposuction is performed by making small incisions around the fat deposits on the skin where the area is going to be treated.
Your surgeon inserts a thin tube called a cannula into the incisions. The cannula loosens the excess fat deposits using a controlled back and forth motion. Then the dislodged fat will be suctioned out of the body via a surgical vacuum or syringe that is attached to the cannula. Some surgeons inject a type of solution into the treating area, which is known as a wet technique while others may use dry liposuction. You may have multiple areas to be treated at the same procedure. Finally, the incisions will be sewed up via stitches. This procedure may last one or two hours depending on the treating area and the amount of fat that is being removed.
You should expect some pain, bruising, and
swelling after the procedure. The surgeon will prescribe some type of painkillers to control the pain and uncomfortable feelings and also antibiotics to prevent the risk of infection. After the procedure, your surgeon places temporary drains to remove the fluid from the body. In addition, you need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks. A compression garment helps control the fluid accumulation and reduces swelling. You may need to wait and rest at home before you want to return to work and resume your normal activities. You could experience some contour irregularities during this period while the remaining fat settles into its right position.
Within a few weeks, your body contours will be improved once the swelling and fluid retention subside. The treated areas start to look less bulky and in several months, the treated areas will have a slimmer look. By aging, it is natural that skin loses its firmness to some extent; but the liposuction results are permanent as long as you keep your weight stable.
