What is Cataract surgery ?
Cataract surgery in Iran Eye cataract refers to the medical condition during which a cloud forms in eye lenses and cause blurry vision by glancing the light. In severe cases, eye Cataract can make daily life activities impossible, and usually, in this situation, doctors recommend cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is a procedure during which eye cataract is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. In most cases, a prolonged waiting period before the operation is harmless for eyes. This provides a gap for patients to consider their other probably treating options.

Cataract surgery
Cataract is referred to as the opaque lens that is usually transparent. For people with cataracts, looking through dark lenses is a bit like looking through foggy glasses. Having cataracts makes reading, driving (especially at night) and seeing people’s faces difficult. Cataracts initially do not greatly affect vision. In these conditions, using glasses and a brighter environment can help prevent blurred vision, but the disease progresses slowly and ultimately affects vision. In this case, cataract surgery may be required. Fortunately in general, cataract surgery is an effective and safe method.

- 1 – with large incision
- 2 – with small incision;
Cataract surgery is performed with a large incision extra capsular; the cornea attaches to the sclera (limbus) about 9 to 11 mm in length, and after opening the anterior capsule, the lens core is removed and after washing the remaining lens material, the lens is inserted into the eye and the incision is closed with 6 to 9 sutures. About two to three months later the sutures are removed. So it takes about two to three months for the vision to reach a relatively normal level. Therefore, the main drawback of this approach is its long recovery time after cataract surgery. In the 2nd cataract surgery method, the cataract extraction is performed using a small incision, about 3 mm in diameter, to remove the contents of the lens.
How cataract surgery is done?
Cataract surgery is uncomplicated and usually takes about 15 minutes. But you are expected to stay in the surgical center for about 90 minutes or more, as it is an extra time to prepare you for operation (pupil flexibility, preoperative drug control) and for short-term evaluation after the operation. You will also be given instructions on cataract surgery before leaving the clinic.

What you should avoid after cataract surgery?
During the first few weeks of recovery after the cataract surgery, it is important to avoid:
- Intense activity and heavy lifting (over 25 pounds).
- Bending, exercise, and similar activities that may affect your eyes during recovery.
- Water should not contact the eye as it can cause infection.
- Keep your eyes closed while showering or bathing.
- Also, avoid hot baths or baths for at least two weeks.
- Any activity that exposes your eyes to dust, pollution or other infectious contaminants.

Causes of Cataract
Most cataracts develop during aging or damage to the lens tissue of the eye. In some cases, it is due to inheriting genetic disorders that can lead to health problems and an increased risk of cataract. As the age increases, the flexibility and transparency of the eye lenses become less and thicker. The changes that occur with age in the lenses lead to the darkening of parts of the lens that become more severe as the disease progresses. Cataract can occur in one eye or in both eyes.

Cataract surgery benefits
Surgery is the only effective way to treat cataracts. When cataracts affect a patient’s quality of life or impair the patient’s ability to perform daily activities such as reading and driving, most physicians recommend performing cataract surgery. Cataract surgery involves replacing dark-eyed lenses with implant and plastic lenses. Replaced lenses, like eye lenses, become a part of the eye. In some people, other eye problems prevent the replacement of the lens. In such cases, vision can be improved by using glasses or medical lenses. Each eye surgery is performed separately and usually within a few weeks. This type of surgery is usually included in outpatient surgeries, meaning that the patient will not need to be hospitalized after cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, the surgeon uses local anesthesia around the eye. This is generally safe, but the patient may have problems such as infection and bleeding. It also increases the risk of retinal detachment.

Frequently asked questions about Cataract surgery
Is cataract eye disorder common only among older adults?
Yes, the chances of having cataract surgery are higher among patients over age 50. Nearly all people above the age of 75 will need to do this surgery. However, congenital cataracts are a rare but possible case among infants. Congenital cataracts are more frequent among infants of mothers who had chickenpox or other infectious diseases during their pregnancy. Congenital cataracts can also be inherited.
How does a cataract get removed?
To restore the patient’s vision, the damaged cataract will be removed and replaced with a clear implant called an intraocular lens. During the cataract surgery, with a scalpel or a laser, a small incision will be made in the front eye surface. Lasers can break the eye lens into small pieces to ease the process of its removal. Usually, eyes will heal quickly after surgery, and no need for stitches is needed. Nowadays, computer-controlled lasers can complete many steps of cataract surgery. Thus, human-based risks of this surgery have decreased significantly.
How long would the surgery take?
The procedure usually takes place between 15 to 30 minutes. However, complications during the surgery, along with the preparation steps, may prolong this duration to 2-3 hours.
What are the essential pre-operation steps?
Usually, before the surgery, patients are instructed not to drink or eat anything for 12 hours. Patients also need to stop taking any other medications temporarily before the surgery, as it might increase the risk of bleeding during the operation. In this regard, you need to well inform your doctor about your medical history and medicines you take before the start of surgery.
What are the possible side effects of eye cataract surgery?
Similar to other surgeries, post-operation complications after cataract surgery are possible. These complications might be as follow: pain, swelling, infection, and bleeding. Fortunately, only a few people may experience these complications after surgery. Following instructions suggested by your doctor after eye cataract surgery can reduce the risk of post-operation risks drastically. Report any unusual symptoms to your doctor immidietly to manage further risks after the surgery.
